Around 16% of programs receiving quality supports showed an improvement in their Parent Aware rating compared to about 3% of programs that did not receive supports over the same time period.
100% of programs receiving business supports stayed in business compared to around 93% of programs that did not receive supports over the same time period.
Early childcare programs fill an important role by being one of the first educators of children outside of the family and by providing quality child care for working parents.
Preliminary evidence suggests that children in these programs showed an improvement in their literacy skills.
Literacy skills form a basis for all other education. If a child struggles early on with literacy, it can slow progression in other subjects as well.
After social emotional coaching, there were some improvements in practices but sample sizes were too small for meaningful interpretations.
On average children in these programs showed a small increase in executive functioning (from the 39th percentile to about the 46th).
Many children spend time in environments that do not give them the skills to succeed in kindergarten. Strong social, language, and early literacy skills are all linked to positive outcomes for kindergarten readiness and can be developed in high quality child care.
Children need to be able to get along with their classmates, control their emotions, and follow directions in order to learn. Child care providers can help promote these skills.
Surveyed providers in Minneapolis and Saint Paul most frequently cited personal reasons for closing. However, they also mentioned business and financial reasons for closing.
Children are influenced by their surroundings when they start to develop early literacy skills and some adults engage more in their child’s language development by doing things like reading to their child, speaking more to their child, etc.
